Lawyers in the Classroom

Lawyers in the Classroom

"The kids are amazingly insightful. The process by which they struggle to understand and apply the concepts and values embodied in the Bill of Rights to the problems we present to them is a wonderful thing to see."-Attorney Volunteer Bob Markowski, W.W. Grainger, Inc.

What is the Edward J. Lewis II Lawyers in the Classroom Program?

For more than 25 years, CRFC’s Lawyers in the Classroom program has placed attorney volunteers in second through eighth-grade classrooms to help students to better understand the U.S. Constitution, our legal system, and law-related careers. CRFC trains attorneys to lead interactive lessons and matches attorneys with social studies classes. CRFC trains teachers and creates materials and assessments appropriate to each grade level. Working together through Lawyers in the Classroom, teachers and attorneys provide multiple, authentic opportunities for students to learn about their rights and responsibilities under the law.

Where and When Does Lawyers in the Classroom Take Place?

Attorney teams are asked to visit their partner school a minimum of three times throughout the school year. Mock trials are also provided for those teachers and attorney teams who wish to do more in-depth work in the classroom. Training is typically held at law firms, and lessons are conducted at the partner schools.

Why Get Involved?

Attorney volunteers provide students with knowledge based on real life experiences, help develop their critical thinking skills, and offer young people an opportunity to have a variety of positive adult role models.

Who Is Involved?

Teams of attorneys from the Chicago area are paired with elementary and middle school teachers and their students in second through eighth-grade social studies classes in the Chicago metropolitan area and throughout the state of Illinois.
