On January 18, the Illinois We the People Hearings were held via zoom with approximately 60 high school students participating.
The simulated congressional hearings are the culminating activity of the We the People program. We the People is a national program that promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s upper elementary and secondary students by having students study the curriculum focused on the history and principles of our constitutional democratic republic.
Illinois will have two We the People schools competing at the national finals later this year. Maine South High School South will represent Illinois as the state champion and St. Joseph-Ogden will represent Illinois as a wild card team as the runner-up. The national hearings will take place in Washington D.C this April. The national hearings will be held in-person.
The Illinois We the People program is administered by the Constitutional Democracy Project at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law and is a project of the Center for Civic Education.
